Walking the broadleaf forest: how an assessment is prepared

Before any report there are days of walking. Here is how the team plans a field assessment and what it records on every walk.

Every assessment starts with a walk: getting to know the terrain, its access routes and the condition of the forest before defining plots or taking samples.

What we record

  • Dominant species and signs of illegal logging.
  • Damage from fires, pests or bark beetle.
  • GPS points of boundaries, streams and roads.

With that information, the office prepares the sampling design and the study schedule.
